We used this to cover some water damaged wood. Its usually best to just cut out anything water damaged but when this was not an option, we dug in, cut and what could not be cut we coated heavily with this. My only issue would be that it is water based (which means no smell). However, since we are sealing the area back up, my understanding is that oil based has more durability. So we covered it with oil based Kilz just to be safe.
