Thrash metal has more variety to it than we expect, but it does take some digging to find what you're looking for. More classic thrash, Overkill, Metallica, Flotsam & Jetsam and Armored Saint for a few fine examples give us the hurt but with a touch that doesn't leave a lot of tell tale bruising on your forehead when you headbang against your bedpost. Death metal takes us another step into the brutality neighborhood, but there remains that area between the thrash bands I mentioned, and death metal like Vader who have thrash tendencies themselves, that I call "No Man's Land" metal because the term "crossover" has been overused. Let's add a band here I admit I have only read about and now I'm delighted to add Canada's long time thrashers Razor to my collection. These guys are so furious, they could be classified in death metal but are decidedly on the barbed wire fencing holding their ground easily. When your vocalist is referred to as "sheepdog" you know this ain't gonna be Top 40. We like to have comparisons but this is ridiculous! Great sound, no screwing around. Razor cuts like they advertise, and I would NOT want to be in a mosh pit with these monsters! But back to comparisons, while they definitely have a sound of their own, perhaps Exodus at their most caustic with some Dark Angel thrown in might give you an idea. There are several Razor albums, and I will be looking for all of them, and running from the volume control when I put them on. Razor is big boys' metal, and I've been a metal geek for at least 50 years so I know my stuff.
