I had set my sights on the Minwax version of this product and was unable to find it anywhere near where I lived when I found this on the shelf at Lowes. (NOTE: I tried putting a review on their website and couldn't find the product so returned to Amazon.com for this review.)THE PROJECT:Reclaimed 5" tongue and groove pine from an old Country and Western Bar near my home which was in excellent shape but battered and bruised from years of abuse by bar patrons. When I have a chance I will upload a picture of the before and after. I did the typical sweep, vacuum, and wet mop and figured I was ready to go. The instructions on the can recommended mopping the floor with TSP to remove any oils and waxes on the surface of the wood. One absolutely black gallon of water later the grain on the flooring was really visible. At which point I noticed that I had a couple of really black smears, and lots of little white dots sitting on the surface of the wood. Using mineral spirits I went ahead and scrubbed away all the gum and what appeared to be latex paint from the surface of the wood.APPLICATION:I used a 10" foam pad for water based paints and finishes and worked from the back wall to the door into the room working from left to right. Right out of the can I had a consistent and smooth floor with little to no bubbling or streaking. I was not sure if the product would level out well as it dried so I went ahead and used the pad to make sure I had an even milky spread on all the wood. Having used other finishes before this stuff spread out like a champ. When I had bubbles they were easily addressed by lightly running the foam pad over the affected area.DRYING TIME:Living in the greater Seattle area I am used to products taking longer than advertised to dry and be ready for the next application. When I reached the doorway to the room I looked back to my starting point and could already see it was drying. I closed the door on the room and returned exactly after two hours, opened the door and the room was dry. No tackiness, it was 100% ready for the next coat. This was in a poorly ventilated space (I compensated when I worked by using a large exhaust fan) with about 60% relative humidity at about 80F.As I was focused to finish the room in 24 hours I found being able to apply the finish within 2 hours helped me finish the project with time to spare. I did play a little bit with an area and then waiting 24 hours to see whether sanding and then applying the product would change any of the characteristics. In my limited test I did not see any change in performance but your mileage may vary.CLEAN UP:I just used the hose in the front yard to clean up the roller pan I used and with minimal water pressure and some light scrubbing the pan was as good as new. It was clearly ready to go for another application. The painting pad I used was removable from the mounting blocks and so was easy to just rinse from the hose. When the water ran clear I wrung dry the pad and placed it in the sun to dry. (See Gotchas)2nd, 3rd, and 4th Coats:With some products I have found the first coat goes on easily and then the product becomes harder to use with additional coats. I found applying this product to be consistent across all four coats. I was able to finishGOTCHAS:* place very little of the product in the roller pan, more than 1/8" to 3/16" and I would get a lot of bubbles when I applied it to the floor* make sure your applicator (brush or pad) is 100% dry before you start using it. I found any extra moisture caused a lot of bubbling, resulted in inconsistent spreading of the product.* the product is very fast drying and will start to harden on your fingers before you finish your project, so I would strongly encourage you to wear gloves* it does a decent job of leveling and filling, but not as well as some other slower drying products.POSITIVES:* decent leveling (see gotchas)* consistent application performance between layers* dried to the touch (no tackiness) within 2 hours, at 90 minutes it was still tacky* very easy clean-upIt is a bit more expensive that some of the Rustoleum and Minwax products, but I would pay the extra to get this product.
